Yo, Dawg! Yall are hot tonight!

March 17, 2009

I passed on Tuesday Night Karaoke at Applebees (man, the ‘burg is a happening place) to watch American Idol, and it ended up being a great evening to do so–Grand Ole Opry Night. Usually the Night They Sing Country is a death knell for competitors, but I was extremely impressed by the way most of the remaining contestants handled it. Anoop Desai did an amazing job with Willie Nelson’s “You Were Always On My Mind,” and Megan Joy, while no Patsy Cline, put her unique twist on “Walkin’ After Midnight.” One of my favorites was Kris Allen’s version of Garth Brooks’ “To Make You Feel My Love,” which I actually preferred to the original. Danny Gokey and Matt Giraud were right up there, too, with their ambitious and very well-executed versions of Carrie Underwood songs. Adam Lambert was…Adam Lambert. A little on the strange side with his Middle Eastern (? I just won’t even visit how that’s country…) version of “Burning Ring of Fire”, but you can’t argue with talent. As Duane commented, Johnny Cash is probably rolling over, standing up, doing cartwheels, and several other things in his grave right about now. Oh, well.

All in all, this is shaping up to be one of the quite a competition, and thus far one of the best seasons I’ve seen.
